32-Inch Tires: The Unicycling Commuter’s Best Friend?

If you ride a unicycle, here is a truth you will never be able to get away from no matter how hard you try.

The top speed you can experience in the saddle of any given unicycle is a direct product of wheel size - the diameter of the wheel, specifically.

Sure, you can get a little faster or stronger yourself, and you can tinker with the length of the crank arms to produce varying mechanical efficiencies, but at the end of the day, it’s the wheel’s diameter that makes the whole thing go.

The bigger the wheel, the faster the unicycle. End of story.

This might have some one-wheelers, especially those that race, tour, commute, or otherwise ride long distances, thinking that they need to shoot straight for a 36.

There is good reason behind this line of thinking and honestly it is not entirely faulted. After all, the 36-inch unicycles are, in fact, the fastest.

But there is another size out there that, frankly, is better, at least in some ways.

32-Inch Tires Have Entered the Chat

So the 36-inch tire is the fastest one in the world of unicycling, and it’s about as big as can be reasonably manufactured, anyway.

A model with 32-inch tires will be almost as fast, and much faster than a model with 29-inch tires, while offering far superior handling.

A 36-inch wheel carries a lot of rotational momentum. That means it will be hard to get it started - and to stop it.

This entails a lot of effort. Moreover, the 36-inch handles like a dumb truck. Not that a 32-inch handles like a 27.5 (it doesn’t) but it does handle much better than a 36-er, closer to a 29.

On top of that, a unicycle with 32-inch tires is smaller so it’s inevitably more accessible to a wider range of riders.

Ultimately, you don’t just get the best of both worlds. You get the best of all worlds. A unicycle with 32-inch tires will be almost imperceptibly slower than a 36, but handle better, not to mention it’ll be more comfortable for you to ride if you’re on the shorter side.

Now you just need to know where to go to get one.
