A Lo Rune in D2R is worth planning around before you spend it. Its appeal starts with Grief and Fortitude, two popular Runewords for physical-damage setups, and comparing D2R Ladder Items can help you put that choice in context rather than treating every endgame upgrade as equally urgent.

The useful question isn't simply what Lo can make. It's which of those options belongs in the build you're actually playing, and whether your next investment should support your character or your mercenary.

Why Is the Lo Rune Valuable in D2R

Lo is a required ingredient for both Grief and Fortitude. That gives it a clear purpose: it contributes to equipment that physical-damage characters and their mercenaries regularly build toward, rather than being something you keep without a particular use in mind.

Finding one can turn a distant equipment goal into a decision you need to make now. Still, having the rune doesn't automatically mean you should commit it immediately; you want the finished Runeword to fit your equipment plan.

Should You Use Lo for Grief or Fortitude

Start with the role you need the finished item to fill. Grief is the weapon option, while Fortitude belongs in the armor discussion, so choosing between them means comparing different equipment priorities rather than two versions of the same upgrade.

For a melee character, look at your current weapon before deciding that armor should come first. If Grief is already the weapon your build is working toward, using Lo there follows that plan instead of creating a second project halfway through gearing.

Fortitude deserves the same practical assessment. If it's the armor you intend to keep using, or a planned piece for your mercenary, its value comes from completing that role rather than merely owning another recognizable Runeword.

There isn't enough information in a rune's name to declare one choice best for every character. Your current equipment, your intended setup, and who will wear the finished item matter more than a recommendation detached from those details.

Should Your Character or Mercenary Get the Upgrade

A mercenary upgrade is part of gearing your build, not an unrelated expense. The important distinction is whether you already have a reason to prioritize that equipment or are considering it only because Fortitude is a familiar recommendation.

Compare that plan with what your own character still needs. If you're choosing between a planned Grief and a planned mercenary Fortitude, decide which project you want to finish first rather than mentally spending the same Lo on both.

That keeps the decision grounded. You don't need to dismiss either option; you need a clear first purchase or craft, with the other left as a later goal.

What Should You Decide Before Spending a Lo Rune

Write down the finished item you want and its intended user before committing your rune. Then check the full Runeword requirements separately; knowing that Lo is required is not the same as having everything ready for the craft.

A Lo Rune is a major step toward Grief or Fortitude, but the better choice is the one that completes a deliberate equipment plan. Next, review your current setup and any cheap D2R Ladder Items you're considering against that plan, then commit only after you've settled which finished item you want first.
