A separate disappearance that month involved Joyce Malecki, who went missing from a shopping center on Nov. 11, 1969, and was found two days later in the Little Patuxent River on the Fort Meade military base. Malecki had been strangled and stabbed; her killing remains unsolved.\n

Decades after the killings, in 1992 former student Jean Wehner — initially identified in court papers as “Jane Doe” — told prosecutors she had recovered memories of sexual abuse by Father Joseph Maskell, the school chaplain and guidance counselor.\n

Wehner also alleged that, months after she told Cesnik about the abuse, Maskell showed her Cesnik’s body in a wooded area and threatened her life; investigators Abbie Hoskins and Catherine Schaub view Wehner’s account as a possible link between Maskell’s abuse and Cesnik’s murder.\n

In 1994 Wehner and Teresa Lancaster filed a $40 million civil suit against Maskell and the archdiocese, but the case never reached trial, in part because Maryland’s statute of limitations for sexual assault cases at that time had long since passed.\n

Maskell died in 2001; later, Wehner and other survivors reached monetary settlements with the archdiocese.\n

Spurred by renewed survivor testimony and newly surfaced records, Hoskins and Schaub interviewed dozens of people, dug up long-buried documents and helped push the story back into the media, keeping pressure on investigators and church officials.\n
